Paul Flynn MP - Independent minded, Welsh radical, comrade and friend

It’s sad news that my fellow Welsh MP Paul Flynn has died. He was a real character and a lovely person.

Paul campaigned with real passion on animal rights, legalising cannabis for medical use and for Welsh devolution.

We shared a view of Welsh devolution, strong devolution in a UK context. A confident outward looking internationalist Wales.

Paul was a radical in the best Welsh tradition. He was loyal to the Labour Party and it was never easy to label him left or right wing. He was independent minded and considered himself ‘classic Labour’.

He loved Wales, it’s culture and it’s heritage and it’s language. A great Parliamentary performer, he would always bring something new and interesting to a debate. Welsh day debates were always spiced up by Paul’s contribution. He had great humour too.

A member of the Class of 87 Welsh MPs along with Rhodri Morgan, Paul Murphy and Alun Michael. When I arrived in Parliament in 2001, I struck up a good friendship with Paul – he was the first to contact me on my re-elections. As Chair of the Welsh Parliamentary Labour Party I would get a note from Paul to confirm the time and a warning he was to raise some matter.

I shall miss him but proud to have shared time with him. RIP and condolences to his family.
