Birthday NHS, I pay tribute to all the staff, past and present for their dedication. The NHS is the greatest social policy in our history and compassion in action. To celebrate this I attended events both locally and in Parliament.
It was Nye Bevan who, despite Tory opposition, took the NHS legislation through the House of Commons. I had the pleasure of meeting his relatives at the Aneurin Bevan Memorial Lecture given by my colleague and biographer Nick Thomas Symonds MP. We need to re-kindle the spirit of 1948 and properly fund the service. I was proud to vote for record extra resources via National Insurance contributions in the early nineties. This current Government has underfunded the NHS and will only have standstill by the next decade.
Among other receptions I attended was the MacMillan event, I heard about their excellent support work from Cancer survivors. As Vice Chair of the All Party Group on Cancer, I pay tribute to all cancer support groups who add value to the NHS.
I met the Wales Office Minister Stuart Andrew MP and MPs from North Wales to discuss the Growth Bid for North Wales. This must move forward and bids be identified to get Welsh and UK funding. There are some excellent North West Wales bids. I urge the six councils to get agreement on the leading bids and I and others will pursue the Chancellor to deliver on these.
