This week I was proud to open the annual St David’s Day debate on Welsh Affairs in the House of Commons. It is important that a dedicated debate focuses on the Welsh Dimension of British politics. The theme of my speech was unity and connectivity. Politics has become divided, locally, nationally and internationally. I believe that all elected politicians have a duty to bring communities and countries together.

I was joined by the CEO of BT Openreach, Clive Selley along with his senior team who had accepted my invitation to come to the Island to see at first-hand the issues facing communities, businesses and individuals in accessing Superfast Broadband.

The Autumn Statement saw a significant shift by the Chancellor towards borrowing to invest; however it is too little too late. We have had six years of austerity with Osborne economics and it has failed, despite hurting the lowest paid and most vulnerable.

In the Constituency I hosted the first Anglesey Broadband Hub event in Llangefni Town Hall. The day brought together BT Openreach, project managers from Government as well as mobile and fibre providers to meet local people and businesses. It was a well-attended event that allowed for detailed discussion.  Broadband and mobile coverage is improving, but there are still too many “not spots” in North Wales and on Anglesey.
